One of the most cyclical businesses that you can own is a garden center. The average garden center will do about three quarters of their annual business in a one month time span. This one month occurs in the early spring, although it changes slightly each year depending on the weather. The obvious reason for this is that people only really go to their garden center at the start of the gardening season to buy their initial stock of flowers. After they have planted their garden, they only need to maintain it at home, thus not needing to go to a garden center again. As well, a garden center will have a second surge in the fall as people go buy bulbs to plant for the following gardening season.
Working at a garden center during the busy times can be extremely stressful. The sheer amount of people that are coming in to your garden center can be overwhelming at times. While other stores may have very busy times, a garden center in the spring will never have any downtime, so their employees are working hard for their entire shift. As well, many customers of a garden center are very particular about what they are looking for and are thus more difficult for a garden center employee to deal with. In order to truly be successful at a garden center you have a sufficient amount of expertise to properly answer all customer inquiries, as well as enough patience to deal with the massive crowds of people that will come into the store.
